Geo40 Northern Plant hits 100%

Northern Plant hits 100% throughput for the first time in November, 2021.

Geo40 develops unique, innovative mineral-recovery processes for deployment at scale while adding value in the geothermal ecosystem, the wider environment and climate.

Who we are:

Geo40 is an innovative technology development and operating company based in New Zealand and targeting the sustainable, low-carbon recovery of valuable minerals from geothermal fluids.

We're a team of diverse experts committed to solving global sustainability challenges within strong environmental, social and governance principles.

We believe that the imperative for decarbonisation is acute. We know we can leverage our technology to play a meaningful role here.

Why it matters

Geo40’s natural silica nanoparticles sourced from geothermal fluids are successfully replacing synthetic and oil based products such as polymers, which invariably end up in waterways.

We believe that the sustainable transition to electric transport will require sources of low-carbon lithium. We are working hard to succeed in this area.

We see potential to recover other strategic minerals present in geothermal fluids, including boron and caesium.

Company Profile

Geo40 is an innovative technology development company that aims to make a significant difference to how mineral value is recovered from geothermal fluids, particularly those fluids used to generate geothermal power, and to do this in a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable manner.

Geo40 also has a demonstrated capability in designing, building and operating plants utilising its own technology developments.

The focus to date has been dominantly on recovering the silica, commonly the most abundant and problematic element for geothermal plant operators. Removing the silica first can open the gateway to recovering the other valuable elements (including Critical Minerals), which are generally present in lower concentrations.

With the commercialisation of Geo40’s silica-recovery technology (Ohaaki Northern Plant), the company’s technology-development focus has been increasing directed onto lithium, with some early stage work on other valuable elements.

A compelling alternative to conventional mineral mining.

Strategic minerals are typically sourced through open pit mining and metallurgical processing, with significant environmental impacts. Recovering minerals from geothermal fluids is an attractive alternative. Geo40’s technologies selectively recover target minerals before fluids are reinjected back below the earth's surface.

Land Use Requirements High Impact Minimal

Water Consumption High Moderate
Post Decommissioning Residual Land Impacts High Risk, Large Disturbance Contained to small plant footprint only
Waste Generation High Minimal
Environmental Permitting Difficult Simple

Environment, Social and Governance

We are committed to the highest standards of environmental, social and governance performance.

We're committed to the welfare of our staff and partners, and we seek opportunities to have positive impacts on climate change.

Our New Zealand operations are located on indigenous Māori-owned land. We operate in the genuine spirit of kotahitanga, or partnership, with the Ngāti Tahu Tribal Lands Trust and we take our role as kaitiaki, or guardians of the environment, very seriously. We are reminded that we will all be judged by our mokopuna (grandchildren).
